Zebulon, NC - Blount, Inc. introduces the Fabtek FT 546C-CB clam bunk forwarder, a tree-length skidder with forwarder capacity. The six-wheel drive machine has more load capacity than a conventional skidder, with a 28 sq.ft. clam volume and 26,000 lb. gross load capacity.
"Customer requests for alternative methods of skidding wood long distances and out of wet sites led to the development of this product." says Gerry Kirkland, Senior VP Operations. "This configuration allows you to transport a large number of bundles with good traction and minimal ground disturbance. And fuel savings will be realized with fewer trips from the woods to the landing."
A low torque center of gravity gives the machine a balanced weight-to-load ratio, even with the weight of the load on the bogie. The result is maximum flotation with minimal wheel spin, soil disturbance and rutting. Self cleaning bogie tracks provide excellent traction, and minimize tire wear and related maintenance.
The clam has a simplified hydraulic lock mechanism, which allows the clam to maintain a secure grip on the load without the use of cables or accumulators. The operator just flicks a switch to lock the load. Left and right side arms can be controlled individually.
The roomy cab has full view windows for 360-degree visibility. The extra height of the cab positions the operator for optimum visibility. Joystick controls are integrated with the seat, which rotates 180 degrees providing reverse operator controls for travel while loading. This coupled with the fact the forwarder carries larger loads at more modest speeds results in minimal operator fatigue.
The Fabtek FT 546C-CB can easily be converted from the clam bunk for tree length wood to a shortwood forwarder with a rack. Like all Fabtek products, the new clam bunk forwarder is a tough, reliable and economical machine.
